Trojans race to 88-65 win in NCHSAA opener

The Defending 4A Champions open with a 38-11 first period in their 2016 NCHSAA 4A Tournament opener, concluding with an 88-65 win over Wilmington Ashley. The Eagles suffer 5 turnovers in their first eight minutes and the Trojans convert them into 71% shooting, dashing to 57-27 halftime lead. Senior captain Nick Kuhns scores 16, KD Burt 15 before Coach Eddie Gray turns the second half over to the able Garner reserves. The good guys shoot a sizzling 71% in each half and claim 28-20 rebound margin, lead by 8 for Alex Reed. Garner (26-2) incurs just 4 turnovers through 3 quarters while Ashley is forced into 17 for the night. The only downside stat-wise was a 10-25 free throw night. Twelve Garner players score as they advance to play Cap-8 foe Broughton Thursday night in round two. Garner hosts the Caps 7PM at Trojan Coliseum. $6 admission (no Trojan passes for post-season games.)
