Trojans hold off the Comets, stay unbeaten in GNRC

The Defending 4A Champions hold off a resilient Clayton squad 88-78 for their 11th GNRC win without a loss. The Comets, led by Trojan alum Denny Medlin (’88), employ an effective stall offense to counter high-scoring Garner (19-2) to stay within 40-37 at the half. But Coach Eddie Gray (’70) high octane offense plows the Comets for 23-9 opening of the second half. A potent press forces 5 Comet turnovers to hold the GNRC foe to just 2-10 shooting in the 3rd period to blow open the game. Davon Newton delights the Garner home crowd with two highlight reel slams en rout to his 12 point night. Clayton does narrow the gap to just 75-71 with just over 2 minutes left before Alex Reed (10 points, 13 rebounds) fuel a 9-1 Trojan run to salt the game away. Omari Harris and Javonte Sims makes some pressure free throws in the waning seconds for the Trojans 37th straight win over conference opponents. Reed’s double-double is his 12th in last 14 games, one of two players in the area averaging double figures in rebounds and points. Allen raises his career point total to 1,248 in Coach Gray’s 472nd career win.
