Trojans are East 4A Champions!!

The top seed Trojans come from behind to take the 2015 NCHSAA 4A Eastern Regional Championship 84-81 over #2 Millbrook. Garner claims their 27th win, the most in school history for a team and provide legendary Coach Eddie Gray his first trip the state title game in 26 years. Garner avenges an earlier loss to Millbrook, their only loss of the stellar season. in their 5th game in 8 days due to weather in NC. The Trojans have reeled off 17 straight wins since their only loss to reach their first Regional since 1997 and first state title game ever. Regional MVP Alex Reed leads the Trojans from 14 points down with 21 points and 12 rebs. Regional All-Tournament selection Julius Barnes 17. JaShaun Smith 17 points and 11 rebounds gives the East Champs two players with double-doubles in the same game since 2009. Nick Kuhns completes Garner scoring with 8. Parrish Tinsley provides critical defense off the bench with 4 key blocked shots.

Double-doubles by two Trojans, Reed & Smith in one game is the first since DaMetrius Upchurch (’09) & Karl Agenor (’09) in 2009. Barnes extends his school record with 106 varsity games played & 451 assists, (Garner 89-17 in those games); Coach Eddie Gray 452nd career win; 25th time this season Garner with 4 or more double-figure scorers, extending their school record. The 27th win tops the school record set by the 1978 State Champion girls team (undefeated) and the 2011 sectional finals boys for wins by a team in one season.

Garner (27-1) faces west regional champ Ardrey Kell in the 4A boys state championship at the Dean E. Smith Center on the campus of UNC Saturday, March 14th 7:30PM. The game will be televised live on Time Warner Channel 323. Tickets available at GMHS: $9 advance, $10 at the door
