Trojans advance to NCHSAA 3rd round with win over Richmond Co

Garner downs Richmond County 54-37 to advance 2016 NCHSAA 3rd round. Senior Collin Eaddy rushes for 196 yards and 3 TDs to lead the Trojans back from 31-21 deficit. Dalton Counts interception return for score on the first Raider play from scrimmage and Braxton Brokenborough 6-yard strike to Roderic Christian puts the good guys up 14-0 at 6:44 of the 1st. But the Raiders strike back after a Garner fumble gives them short field for 18-yard pass and ill-timed penalty on kickoff results in tying 2-yard score to make it 14-14. Eaddy first TD puts Garner back ahead with 9 minutes to halftime but Richmond answers to knot the game 21-21. The Trojan defense records 10 sacks, led by Matthew Butler’s four, but the Raiders use three big +40 yard scoring strikes for 31-28 halftime lead. Braxton Brokenborough 14-yard TD pass to Justin Lewis caps the Garner first half scoring, the start of the Garner comeback. The senior captain Eaddy records 62 rushing yards on the tying drive with Noah Giroux 27-yard FG knotting it with 5:11 left in the 3rd. On the ensuing drive, Daiveon Carrington forces the Raider punter out of the end zone for Garner’s 7th safety of the year and 33-31 lead. After the Richmond pooch kick gives the Trojans the ball on the 44, Eaddy dashes the distance for his second tally and 40-31 lead Garner would keep for the remainder. Eaddy’s 3rd TD from 30 yards out, his 39th career rushing score for 6th all-time for Garner, puts the Trojans up 47-31 and 26 straight points. Richmond gets a kick return score before Brokenborough 32 yard TD run with 51 seconds left sends Garner to 3rd round match up with #1 Middle Creek next Friday night
