JV Trojans rally for the win at New Hanover

Daveon Dunn hits Darius Boone for 36-yard TD at 1:24 left for the Garner JV football win at New Hanover 28-26. Dunn pass to Tom Horton one play earlier completes a miraculous conversion that saw Garner (3-0) with 3rd & 37 on their own 13, trailing 26-22 in the JV Wildcats home opener. After Dunn hits Boone for a pinpoint reception for 30 yards at the 40, Dunn gives the JV Trojans new life with 24 yarder to Horton on 4th down. Derrick Alston got the good guys on the board in the 2nd quarter with 57-yard TD run, his 9th of the season. Dunn’s 9-yard scoring strike to Horton with just 26 seconds left ties the game at halftime 14-14 after Alston’s 2-point run. Dunn hit Boone for 53-yard catch-n-run at 8:19 of 3rd & another Alston 2-pt run for 22-14 Garner JV lead before the JV Wildcats roar back, aided by two ill-time, but questionable defensive penalties (JV Trojans called for 8 flags for 105 yards vs two against NH). Garner lost most of the 50-50 calls all night, including 3 offensive calls in their game-winning drive before Dunn-Boone-Horton heroics. New Hanover last gasp series is thwarted by Josh Grimmett intense pass rush, sacks by Andrew Vines and Aundre Henry with just five ticks left to keep Garner unbeaten. Alston leads the rushing attack with 159 yards to bring his season total to 578 in 3 games.
