Garner captures the 2017 GNRC Championship

Top-seed Garner takes care of business with their 79-50 thrashing of Knightdale to win the 2017 GNRC Tournament Championship at Campbell. The Trojans head into the NCHSAA 4A Playoffs with 25-2 record and unblemished 17-0 vs conference foes. Coach Eddie Gray wins his 17th conference title and 60th consecutive win over conference opponents. Alex Reed completes his GNRC career with 23 points and KD Burt posts his 12th double-double of the season with 20 points, 13 rebounds. Trayvon Ferrell tallies 13 & Demetric Horton hits four big 3’s for his 12 points. Marque Maultsby stirs the Trojan offense again with 9 big assists to go with his 6 points. Garner bolts to an insurmountable lead with another huge 3rd period, their trademark this season, out-scoring the 3rd seed Knights 27-12 and follow it with 20-11 final period to put the Championship away. The fierce Trojan press causes 15 second half turnovers from Knightdale and pressure on the boards results in 29-21 rebound margin. Garner out-shoots the Knights 56%-48% for the game after Knightdale held a shooting and rebound margin at the break. Horton’s work from the arc kept Garner up with a lead they did not trail after halftime. Coach Gray enjoys his career win #507. The Champs await their opponent for the NCHSAA opener Feb. 21st, to be announced this weekend.
